Martial Arts Derived ‘MAD’ FITNESS

Is a concept developed by former World and European Karate Champions William Thomas and Mervyn Etienne of Karate specific circuit training that integrates traditional circuit training and sports specific drills. When preparing for an event / a season the work type has to reflect the aim of each phase. The circuits can be adapted to match each specific stage of training.

General phase
Strength phase
Explosive phase
Speed phase
Competition phase
Transition phase

The aim of the general phase is to build up a base fitness level of which one of the core objectives is to improve your Vo2 Max (aerobic fitness). This phase can be combined with strength training to improve your over all strength. It is important to the athlete to be mindful that performance levels may drop at this stage and may not be able to reach previous competition speeds.

In the closing months before the event / season explosive power and speed are necessary components and a ‘must’ transition from general phase training. An increase in intensity and switch to anaerobic exercise starts to hone the body for the task ahead. With a sound aerobic base the objective of this phase is to build up your lactate threshold and tolerance levels enabling you to sustain the intensity throughout.

The final competition phase will involve high intensity work with the dominate factor being sports specific Karate. Transition phase training will maintain the ‘sharpness’ and fitness levels throughout the season. Please note that these regimes are to complement technical skills learnt and drilled in the dojo and are ‘as well as’ and not ‘instead of’.
